Regina Boone is an award-winning photojournalist with over two decades of experience documenting human resilience in Richmond, Virginia, and beyond. Her work has earned national recognition, including one of her photographs being selected by CNN for its 2020 list of “100 Photos that Defined the Decade.” In 2016, Time magazine featured her portrait of a toddler affected by the Flint water crisis on its cover, a photograph later recognized by CNN as emblematic of the decade.
Boone has dedicated much of her career to community-focused journalism. She spent more than 20 years at The Richmond Free Press, her family’s weekly newspaper in Virginia, and nearly 14 years at the Detroit Free Press. Her reporting blends a deep commitment to storytelling with a nuanced understanding of social justice and human experience.
A graduate of Roland Park Country School in Baltimore, Boone earned her undergraduate degree from Spelman College and taught English in Osaka, Japan, for three years before pursuing graduate studies in photojournalism at Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication. In 2018, she completed the Knight-Wallace Fellowship at the University of Michigan, where she began researching the story of her paternal grandfather, Tsuruji Miyazaki, a Japanese American wrongfully arrested following the attack on Pearl Harbor, a quest personally commissioned by her father in his final days.
Boone’s work reflects a lifelong dedication to capturing the intersection of history, community, and resilience, and she brings this perspective to her role as a board member of the Kodjoe Family Foundation.
