Boris Kodjoe has spent 25 years moving between rooms: entertainment, business, tech, and the boardrooms where people decide what “investing in Africa” actually means. Most of those rooms still talk about the continent like it’s a cause. Co-founding Full Circle Festival was his answer to that: get heads of state and cultural leaders in the same room and shift the mindset from charity to investment. Global Fund for Children has been doing the same shift, at the grassroots level, for over 30 years. That’s why Boris Kodjoe is proud to stand with them as a Global Ambassador.
Global Fund for Children isn’t a household name, and that’s kind of the point. They’ve partnered with more than 1,000 community-based organizations in 90-plus countries, and for over 80 percent of those partners, GFC is the first flexible institutional funder they’ve ever had. Not a grant with 40 pages of restrictions attached. Flexible, long-term support that trusts the people closest to the problem to know the solution.
That’s the model the Kodjoe Family Foundation recognizes. It’s the same instinct behind the Foundation’s Collective Impact pillar: don’t parachute in with a fix, back the people already doing the work so they can do more of it. GFC funds education, gender justice, youth power, climate resilience, safety and wellbeing, and solidarity in emergencies, six focus areas that all come down to the same question the Foundation asks itself: who’s already doing this right, and how do we get out of their way while backing them?
Boris and his wife Nicole Ari Parker built the Love All Scholarship Program on that belief. They built their partnership with the Center for Spina Bifida Prevention on it too. And it’s the same reason Full Circle exists as a pillar of the Foundation: the diaspora isn’t a demographic to study, it’s a network that needs deliberate reconnection, one grassroots partnership at a time.
Being a Global Ambassador for GFC means Boris is putting his platform behind organizations that have been doing this work for three decades, long before it was a talking point. It means using Full Circle’s own network to point more resources toward the youth-led and community-led groups GFC backs. This isn’t a new lane for the Foundation. It’s the same lane, at a bigger scale.
